Bungie’s presence at the last PlayStation Showcase was one of the big surprises of the night. The company stirred the nostalgia of its fans with the revelation of Marathon, the reboot of one of its classic sagas. The IP is renewed to focus on a PvP multiplayer shooter focused on taking advantage of the elements of the extraction subgenre. Coming soon to PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC. Marathon, the return of the myth in reboot format
The title is set in the planet Tau Ceti IV, a persistent world facing the players, who will play the role of Runner. These characters are “cybernetic mercenaries designed to survive in the planet’s inhospitable environments and to explore the lost colony that lived on the surface of Tau Ceti,” the study underlines in a press release.

The experience can be enjoyed individually with groups made up of up to three simultaneous players, something that is inevitably reminiscent of the structure of Destiny. “Marathon is the beginning of an amazing journey for Bungie, one that draws inspiration from our studio’s storied history while steadily moving into the future,” said Scott Taylor, the project’s general manager. “We’ve taken all the lessons learned over the past 30 years creating amazing worlds and innovative PvP experiences and turning them into a game that looks, sounds and plays unlike anything Bungie has ever created.”
Taylor points out that the cornerstone of the new stage of Marathon is “a PvP full of tension and emotion” encapsulated in “a dynamic online world with an exuberant story in which the actions of the players have their consequences that the seasons that are seeing the light”. We know that it will have cross-play and save functions, something that continues the line seen in the Destiny saga.
